Police Log: Mama and baby moose draw a crowd, diesel spill at Empire pass, and road hazards

A mother moose and calf drew a crowd near Park Station, while police also responded to a diesel spill, a few unusual suspicious-activity calls, a hit-and-run, and reports of reckless driving throughout the week.

Monday, Aug. 3

Incident: Hit and run
A vehicle was involved in a reported hit-and-run with what was believed to be a FedEx truck on Main Street.

Incident: Utility problem
Black water was reported coming from a manhole cover near the Deer Valley Drive roundabout. The Park City Water Department responded.

Tuesday, Aug. 4

Incident: Traffic stop
Police stopped a black vehicle traveling northbound on Bonanza Drive after it passed a clearly posted road-closed sign near Kearns Boulevard.

Incident: Wildlife problem
A mother moose and calf were spotted near the Poison Creek Trail by Park Station, where a group of about 20 people had gathered around the animals.

Wednesday, Aug. 5

Incident: Property damage
An HOA president reported that a resident had removed barricades from a recently resurfaced neighborhood road.

Incident: Utility problem
A major water leak was reported coming from a vault on the north side of a lot on Sunnyside Drive.

Thursday, Aug. 6

Incident: Vagrancy
Police responded to a report that a homeless man had broken into an apartment building on Bonanza Drive.

Incident: Suspicious activity
A resident reported receiving a racist letter addressed to her son.

Incident: Suspicious activity
A caller reported seeing a possibly intoxicated man in a vehicle who appeared to be grabbing an uncomfortable-looking woman in the passenger seat.

Incident: Citizen assist
A woman experiencing homelessness was reported repeatedly entering a Main Street store, behaving rudely toward employees, and taking items.

Incident: Attempt to locate
Police were alerted to a truck allegedly swerving between lanes and making sudden hard stops on SR-224.

People holding signs in the old Maverik parking lot on Bonanza Drive were reported for trespassing.

Friday, Aug. 7

Incident: Suspicious activity
A resident on Monitor Drive reported someone flashing headlights and shining flashlights toward their home in the early hours of the morning.

Incident: Hazardous materials spill
A diesel truck punctured its fuel tank at the Empire Pass parking lot, resulting in a reported diesel spill.

Incident: Traffic stop
Police stopped a driver on Park Avenue after observing the driver looking down at and tapping a cellphone while traffic was heavily backed up.

Incident: Traffic complaint
Two e-bike riders were reported passing vehicles over a double yellow line while traveling from Royal Street toward Deer Valley Drive.

Saturday, Aug. 8

Incident: Non-reportable accident
A vehicle was reportedly hit in a parking lot near the golf course on Thaynes Canyon Drive.

Incident: Found property
A wallet found near City Park was returned to its owner. The owner said the identification and cards were still inside but several hundred dollars were missing.

Sunday, Aug. 9

Incident: Property damage
A driver reported following a truck on U.S. 40 that was throwing rocks onto the roadway and damaging vehicles.
