PARK CITY, Utah — Park City High School students were released early Tuesday to participate in the high school’s annual Memorial 5k run hosted by the National Honor Society.

The race is always held near Memorial Day and first began as a way to remember the 2008 deaths of five Park City High School graduates — Mike Pennels, Connie Blout, Matt Knoop, Erica Knell and Chris Yeates, who all died within the span of about six months.

Now, over 100 banners recognizing Park City community members who have died line the 3.1 mile route that loops through the Park Meadows neighborhood.

The race was free to run, but also acted as a fundraiser for Labs For Liberty and the Homeless Youth Center of Salt Lake. Funds also support student scholarships and summer humanitarian trips for honor society members.
