UTAH — Measles cases in Utah continue to rise, with 583 total cases reported as of April 8, according to the Utah Department of Health and Human Services Office of Communicable Diseases.
So far in 2026, 386 cases have been reported — nearly double the 197 cases recorded last year. Health officials say the current outbreak, which began in June 2025, is the largest in Utah since 1976.
There were 121 cases reported in just the last 3 weeks.
Cases have been reported across all age groups, with the highest concentration among school-aged children between 5 and 18 years old. To date, 47 people have been hospitalized due to measles complications, including 29 patients under the age of 18.
Vaccination data shows the majority of cases are among unvaccinated individuals. Of the 583 reported cases, 485 people had received no doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, 59 had received at least one dose, and 39 had unknown vaccination status.
Health officials continue to emphasize vaccination as the most effective protection against measles. Two doses of the MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing infection, while a single dose is about 93% effective.
“Getting vaccinated is a family decision, and we encourage all Utahns to talk to a healthcare provider about protecting yourself and your family against measles,” state disease control officials said in a recent social media update.
Nationwide, outbreaks remain active in several states. South Carolina has reported the highest number of cases, with 997 total infections since October 2025. State officials there say the outbreak could be declared over later this month if no new cases are identified.
