The Inn at Sundance: A staycation that feels like the real thing

SUNDANCE, Utah — There’s something to be said for a getaway that doesn’t require a flight or three hours of drive time and a carefully orchestrated packing list. Sundance Mountain Resort’s new Inn, which opened with 63 ski-in, ski-out rooms in Provo Canyon, makes the case that sometimes the best escape is the one that’s actually easy to pull off.
Less than an hour from Park City and Salt Lake City, the Inn sits at the base of the Outlaw Express lift. Not near it. Not a short walk away. Directly at it. Hand the ski valet your gear at the door, change into boots in the dedicated boot room, and walk outside to the lift. For families with young kids—or couples who just don’t want to spend half their morning schlepping equipment across a parking lot—this setup streamlines what’s usually the most tedious part of a ski day.
A Creek Runs Through It
The building spans both sides of North Fork Creek, which continues to flow between the two wings. Room options include views of Mount Timpanogos, the canyon’s northern ridge, or the creek itself. The interiors use natural materials—wood, stone, leather—in a way that feels considered rather than overdone.
The Living Room, a central gathering space, has vaulted ceilings and windows facing Timpanogos. It’s where the complimentary European-style breakfast happens each morning, and where people tend to end up throughout the day—coffee in the morning, drinks and board games after skiing. The art throughout the Inn includes commissioned pieces and curated finds that add character without feeling like they’re trying too hard.

What Makes It Work
Sundance’s 71 trails lean toward intermediate terrain, which translates to a mountain where most of the family can ski together rather than splitting up by ability level. The pace here is slower, the lift lines shorter. It’s a mountain built for skiing, not for standing in line.
The Springs, a short walk from the Inn, offers three outdoor soaking pools with canyon views, a sauna, and a cold plunge. It’s open to Inn guests and provides a solid après-ski option that works for families and couples alike. The fitness center includes daily yoga classes and a stretch room.
Foundry Grill sits close enough to walk for dinner, serving the kind of elevated comfort food that works for both picky kids and adults who want something more interesting than chicken fingers. For a more refined evening, the Tree Room offers what Sundance calls “the apex of mountain dining”—locally sourced cuisine served among Robert Redford’s Native American art collection, with tabletops sourced from a single tree. This winter, the Tree Room added the Library Lounge, a small, intimate space for pre-dinner cocktails or light bites next to the original fireplace. Note that the Tree Room doesn’t accommodate children under 12.

The Appeal
What the Inn offers is relatively straightforward: well-designed accommodations, actual ski-in, ski-out access, and amenities that work for both families and couples. But it’s the details that make the difference—the ski valet who takes your gear at the door, the art collection that’s actually worth looking at, the way the building sits in the landscape rather than imposing on it. The fact that it’s less than an hour away makes it viable for a weekend without requiring the planning of a major trip.
For families looking to avoid the production of packing up for a long-distance ski trip, or couples wanting a mountain weekend close to home, the Inn gets both the big things and the small things right.
A well-appointed room, good food, easy skiing access, outdoor soaking pools under the stars, curated art, complimentary breakfast, yoga classes—36 hours turns out to be just enough time to remember what a getaway is supposed to feel like.
The Inn at Sundance Mountain Resort is located at 8841 N. Alpine Loop Road in Sundance. Room rates vary by season and view type. Information and reservations are available at Sundance’s website or 800-892-1600.
