COALVILLE, Utah — Summit County Clerk Eve Furse has resigned, effective April 8, Summit County announced Wednesday, setting in motion the process to appoint someone to fill the remainder of her term before the office goes before voters in November.
“Serving the residents of Summit County as Clerk for the last five years has been a tremendous honor, and I am grateful to the voters for giving me this opportunity,” Furse said in a statement released by the county. “In that time, our office has transformed to keep up with changing demands and is well-positioned to meet the coming needs.”
Furse said she was grateful for the clerk’s office staff and county colleagues. “Together, we’ve run transparent elections, maintained public records, facilitated marriages, issued countless passports and business licenses, and much more,” she said.
Under Utah law, the Summit County Council must notify the Summit County Democratic Party within 10 days. The party then has 30 days to submit names to the council, which appoints a replacement to complete the term.
The resignation comes as the county clerk’s office is already on the Nov. 3, 2026, general election ballot. TownLift previously reported that former Summit County Council Chair Malena Stevens entered the race for county clerk in December. Oakley resident and business owner Suni Woolstenhulme also filed to run.
The county clerk is one of Summit County’s elected offices and carries broad administrative responsibilities. According to Summit County, the office administers elections, maintains voter registration records, issues business and marriage licenses, serves as a passport acceptance facility, and acts as the repository for council minutes, ordinances, resolutions, and related documents. Utah election code identifies the county clerk as the election officer for county ballots and elections.
