PARK CITY, Utah — Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter will host a free online webinar about moose behavior, ecology, and safety in Park City on Tuesday, Feb. 24. The event, titled “The Moose Next Door,” is scheduled for 6 p.m. MST and will feature Utah State University Assistant Professor David Stoner.

Organizers said the webinar is aimed at helping residents and visitors better understand one of the area’s most recognizable large mammals — and how to share space with it.
“Moose, like all wildlife, need lots of space from people and pets so that everyone, including the moose, stays safe,” said Rhea Cone, Swaner’s director of conservation. Cone said people should watch for signs a moose is distressed, including “raised hackles, licking lips, and stomping,” and increase their distance if those behaviors appear.

“My favorite ‘rule of thumb’ is that if I can hold my hand out and cover the whole animal with my thumb, I’m far enough away,” Cone said.
Swaner said the session will cover moose biology and natural history, along with guidance on safe coexistence and observation from a distance. Organizers described moose as a frequent point of curiosity in Park City, where residents sometimes encounter the animals in neighborhoods and on trails.

Registration is free but required to receive the Zoom link, Swaner said. You can register through Eventbrite, and additional information will be posted on Swaner’s website.
The webinar will be recorded and made publicly available on Swaner’s YouTube channel after the broadcast.
Swaner’s adult education program, “Walks, Talks, and Workshops,” is supported locally by the Summit County RAP Tax.
Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter operates a 1,200-acre nature preserve in Park City that includes wetlands, public trails, and wildlife habitat. The organization also runs a LEED Platinum museum and hosts community events, exhibits, and adult education programming. Swaner engages more than 3,500 children annually in science-based environmental learning.
