HEBER CITY, Utah — Wasatch County resident Micah Kagan is running to represent Utah House District 59, a seat that includes Park City and parts of Summit and Wasatch counties.
In announcing his campaign, Kagan framed his bid as an effort to push back against what he described as a state government that has overlooked Wasatch Back communities. He pointed specifically to state decisions involving the Mayflower tract and to legislative spending to oppose voter-approved initiatives.
“I am running to restore representative democracy to the people of the Wasatch Back,” Kagan said in a statement. “For too long, our interests have been ignored in Salt Lake City, whether it’s the state legislature giving away the Mayflower tract without any benefit accruing to Wasatch
County or the state legislature spending taxpayer dollars, our dollars, to fight against popular initiatives passed with the majority support of the people. The residents of Park City and Wasatch County deserve fair representation in the state government, and I intend to provide that because in the United States, the people are sovereign, not the entrenched interests of the state legislature.”
District 59 is currently represented by Republican Mike Kohler.
Kagan, who is originally from Philadelphia, said he and his wife moved to Utah after experiencing the state’s outdoor landscape and decided to build their family and lives here. He said the couple has two sons and that the family spends much of its time outdoors, including skiing in winter and hiking and fishing in summer. He said they also try to visit Utah’s national parks when possible.
Kagan said he is an active member of Temple Har Shalom.
Professionally, Kagan works in the skier services department at Deer Valley Resort, and previously managed the resort’s Empire Pass portfolio, according to his announcement.
Before joining Deer Valley, Kagan worked as the business development director for Leaders for Clean Air, a group focused on expanding Utah’s electric-vehicle charging infrastructure.
Outside of work, Kagan said he coaches youth basketball and volunteers at his children’s school, describing those roles as part of a broader effort to strengthen community connections across the Wasatch Back.
Kagan earned his undergraduate degree from George Washington University and holds a master’s degree from New York University.
