UTAH — Winter has arrived in Utah, but warmer-than-usual temperatures are making ice conditions unpredictable or even nonexistent.
For anglers hoping to go ice-fishing, that means being extra vigilant in ensuring safe conditions. Despite the mild weather, a variety of ice-fishing events and tournaments are planned across the state this winter, offering chances to catch fish, win prizes, and support local fisheries; though, some have already been delayed or canceled due to poor ice conditions.
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) has strongly encouraged anyone participating in the events or ice-fishing on their own to review ice-safety recommendations on the Utah State Parks website.
Anglers 12 and older must have a valid Utah fishing license, and some events within state parks require an entrance fee.
Safety first
Anyone heading out on the ice should follow safety recommendations from Utah State Parks, including checking ice thickness and wearing proper safety gear.
Event organizers advise participants to monitor weather and ice conditions, as events may continue to be canceled or postponed due to unsafe ice.
More information is available on the DWR and state park websites.
Notable tournaments this winter
Mac Attack Fishing Contest
Hosted by Buckboard Marina at Flaming Gorge Reservoir and sponsored by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, the Mac Attack contest focuses on reducing the population of small lake trout (under 25 inches) to improve the fishery. Anglers can participate on ice or by boat. The contest runs Feb. 20–22, with a $65 registration fee. Anglers fishing on the Wyoming side must ensure they have the proper Wyoming and U.S. Forest Service permits. More info on the event website.
Lake Trout Angler Harvest Program
This new program, sponsored by the Flaming Gorge Chamber of Commerce, Wyoming Game and Fish Department, and DWR, also aims to reduce small lake trout at Flaming Gorge. The program opened Jan. 1 and runs through April 30, 2026. Awards will be given to anglers who catch the most lake trout under 25 inches or tagged fish. Participation is free, and details are available on the Flaming Gorge website.
Frozen Frenzy Ice Fishing
Scofield State Park is hosting the Frozen Frenzy Ice Fishing tournament, which was delayed from Jan. 17 to Saturday, Jan. 31, due to dangerous ice conditions. Cash prizes are available across several categories. Registration details and contest information are on the Frozen Frenzy Ice Fishing Facebook page.
Whether you’re a seasoned angler or trying ice fishing for the first time, Utah’s winter tournaments offer a chance to enjoy the outdoors, compete for prizes, and support local fisheries.
