WASATCH COUNTY, Utah — Drivers heading between Provo and Heber City will soon see major changes on US-189, as the Utah Department of Transportation begins a multi-year project to add two new lanes of traffic on the final stretch of highway with only one lane in each direction.
Currently, the US-189 narrows to only one lane between Wallsburg and Charleston. The project will see new travel lanes cut into the eastern hillside as a separate and elevated road, known as a split highway. A similar method is used on a section of US-189 in Provo Canyon.
UDOT announced other key features of the project include a new traffic signal at the intersection of US-189 and SR-113, improved access and parking at the Island Beach Day Use Area, better sight lines through the curved section along the reservoir, and new wildlife fencing to protect drivers and animals.

Construction for the project will begin on Oct. 13.
Crews will direct alternating one-lane traffic from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weeknights, 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Saturdays and 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. on Sundays. Delays may range up to 15 minutes during these times.
