KAMAS, Utah — Law enforcement officers responded Friday afternoon to reports of gunshots near Soapstone Campground off Highway 151, also known as the Mirror Lake Highway, prompting a temporary road closure as deputies investigated the scene.
According to Summit County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Skyler Talbot, the situation unfolded early Friday afternoon when dispatchers received reports of shots fired in the area east of Kamas. Deputies closed portions of the highway as a precaution while they assessed the potential threat.
Talbot said at 1:42 p.m. the shots had ceased and deputies were interviewing several people believed to be involved to determine whether the incident was a case of target shooting or something more serious.
“We do not believe there is a current public safety threat,” Talbot said, adding that the road had reopened as of Friday evening. “Deputies are speaking with those involved to determine if the shots were being fired at a person or if this was a target shooting situation.”
No injuries were immediately reported. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office said more information would be released as the investigation continues.
