PARK CITY, Utah — Park City Community Foundation and Recycle Utah have launched new community food waste bins at Recycle Utah’s facility, expanding local efforts to divert organic waste from the landfill as part of the Zero Food Waste initiative.
Beginning Oct. 13, residents can drop off food scraps free of charge during Recycle Utah’s business hours. All food waste items—including meat, dairy, small bones, and processed foods—are accepted. Momentum Recycling will handle regular pickups.
“Community bins are something we have been considering since we first launched the Zero Food Waste initiative,” said Andy Hecht, Park City Community Foundation’s climate fund manager. “It’s a great way to introduce folks to food waste collection, and we appreciate the partnership with Recycle Utah to offer this service to our community members.”
Residents are asked to bring food scraps in compostable bags or other non-plastic containers. Recycle Utah’s store will offer kitchen caddies and compostable bags for purchase.Yard waste and plastic are not accepted.
Recycle Utah Operations Director Troy Holding said the bins will help the community take another step toward its sustainability goals. “This work allows us to divert even more waste and reduce emissions from the landfill, and work towards our community’s Zero Food Waste goal,” he said.
In addition to the new bins, the Community Foundation is funding the return of a food waste collection site at Jeremy Ranch Elementary School for use by students, families, and staff. Students across the Park City School District already compost during lunchtime, but the JRES bin allows for after-school and weekend participation.
Launched in June 2024, the Zero Food Waste initiative aims to eliminate all food waste from the Summit County landfill by 2030. More than 1,400 households have already joined Momentum Recycling’s curbside collection program. Free weekly service for new Summit County customers is available through the end of 2025.
