PARK CITY, Utah – In a significant step toward transforming global tourism, Visit Park City has joined The Collective, an elite alliance of nearly 30 destinations worldwide committed to leveraging tourism as a force for environmental and social good. The announcement positions the Utah mountain town alongside renowned sustainable destinations, including Copenhagen, Queenstown, and Banff, in driving industry-wide change.
A New Era of Responsible Tourism
The Collective represents more than just a networking opportunity – it’s a strategic alliance focused on measurable impact across critical global challenges. Member destinations collaborate on solutions spanning climate action, biodiversity protection, cultural preservation, and community resilience, transforming tourism from a potential environmental burden into a catalyst for positive change.
For Park City, this membership validates years of groundbreaking sustainability initiatives and signals the destination’s emergence as a global leader in responsible tourism practices. Located just 25 minutes from Salt Lake City, the mountain community has systematically built what many consider North America’s most comprehensive local sustainability movement.
“Joining The Collective marks an important milestone for Park City,” said Jennifer Wesselhoff, president & CEO of Visit Park City. “Our community has built one of the most comprehensive local sustainability movements in North America. Being part of this global alliance allows us to exchange ideas, scale our impact and contribute to a broader transformation of the industry.”
Park City’s Sustainability Blueprint
The destination’s approach to sustainable tourism extends far beyond typical green initiatives. Park City has implemented a sweeping Sustainable Tourism Plan anchored by five core stewardship principles and encompassing more than 80 ongoing initiatives. This comprehensive framework addresses everything from environmental protection to social equity and economic resilience.
Among Park City’s most notable achievements is the deployment of the country’s first public electric-assist bike share program, demonstrating how destinations can innovate transportation solutions that benefit both visitors and residents. The community also offers free year-round public transit, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of tourism while improving accessibility for all community members.
Global Collaboration for Local Impact
Membership in The Collective provides Park City with access to a sophisticated network of knowledge exchange and co-created strategies. The alliance operates on the principle that complex global challenges require collaborative solutions, with each destination contributing unique expertise while benefiting from collective wisdom.
“The world is facing complex, interconnected challenges, and tourism must evolve to meet them,” said Rodney Payne, CEO of Destination Think, the organization facilitating The Collective. “Park City’s bold leadership, clear vision and community-driven approach make it a vital contributor to our shared mission. We’re thrilled to welcome them to The Collective.”
Through The Collective, Park City joins a growing movement of destinations committed to transforming tourism into a powerful force for global good – ensuring that the places we love to visit remain vibrant and resilient for generations to come.
