First time in a mountain setting, U.S. Sailing National Championships hosted in Park City

PARK CITY, Utah — Park City Sailing Association (Sail PC) hosted the U.S. Adult National Championships at Jordanelle Reservoir over the weekend, hosting teams from Utah, California, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, Minnesota, Louisiana, Ohio, Maryland, and Massachusetts. It was the first time the annual event had been held on a mountain lake. The Sail PC home team placed fifth, skippered by Todd Wake and his crew, Jay Miles, Kristine Wake, and Scott VerMerris.

For Sail PC’s representative Annabel Jamail, this was her first time serving in the position of Regatta Chair. The year-round Park City resident is a Texas native who races competitively in the winters in Florida when she’s not racing in the summers in Park City.

“Park City not only has great skiing, but it also has sailing that can happen at a high level due to the perfect proximate placement of the Jordanelle.” Jamail told TownLift out on the water. “We’re so proud to welcome sailors from around the country to this fun event and thanks to our sponsors Deer Valley’s East Village, Jordanelle State Park, and several others, along with the huge group of volunteers, it’s a wonderful success.”

The race is coed however, not mandatorily so, thus some of each four-person crew is comprised of all women, some of all men, and some mixed. All competitors are over the age of 20. They have to turn 19 in the year 2025, the youngest competitor here was 22-years-old, and the oldest was in their 60s.

The first two days had a desired amount of wind with the third day having less, however, every watercraft has the same conditions to manage keeping the competition a fair one. The fourth day found some rain in the late afternoon hours only.

There’s a respectful reciprocation of hometown hospitality when Sail PC people travel to these other communities around the country for sport camps, comps, and vacations.

Sail PC provides the boats so no teams travel with their own at this level of national race. The Park City Team was sponsored, as written on their sail in red letters on boat number 6, by the ski wax company SWIX.

Ten boats sailed in multiple heats per day and there was so much interest in teams coming to Park City that a few others didn’t make the cut to attend and participate.
