PARK CITY — A 40-year-old man is behind bars after authorities say he broke into the Park City Gun Club on Sunday, opened fire inside the building, and later led officers on a pursuit that ended in a SWAT standoff at Trailside Park’s basketball court.
The suspect, identified as Abraham Hernandez Duron, was booked into the Summit County Jail on 21 felony counts, including aggravated assault against law enforcement, aggravated burglary, theft of a firearm, and 15 counts of felony discharge of a firearm. He also faces a misdemeanor charge for failing to stop at an officer’s command.
According to court filings, Duron allegedly forced his way into the gun club on Forestdale Drive early Sunday morning and began shooting weapons inside the facility. Investigators estimate the gunfire caused more than $5,000 in damage. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office said 13 rounds exited through a window, while two others struck the north wall of the building.
As officers responded, one deputy reported being struck in the hand by an object believed to have come from the gun club. After leaving the scene, Duron allegedly refused police commands and fled in a white van. The chase ended when the vehicle crashed into a basketball pole near Trailside.
Law enforcement reported that Duron remained in the van with a rifle across his lap as SWAT officers surrounded him. The standoff ended a short time later when he surrendered without further incident.
Duron was evaluated at a hospital before being booked into jail.
David Raffone, the CEO & Owner of the Park City Gun Club, stressed the incident underscores the importance of responsible firearm practices and reinforces their commitment to safety above all else.
“At Park City Gun Club, safety is our highest priority. Thanks to the security upgrades we put in place after taking ownership two months ago, we were able to quickly identify the suspect and work directly with law enforcement. We are grateful to the Summit County Sheriff’s Department for their rapid response, and we are already reviewing additional measures to further protect our members, staff, and community,” Raffone told TownLift.
He added since taking ownership of the club two months ago, the club’s security system and cameras were upgraded allowing for quick identification of the suspect and an ability to work directly with law enforcement in real time.
“We are deeply grateful to the Summit County Sheriff’s Department for their swift response and professionalism in resolving the situation,” he said.
