Road rage exchange escalates on I-80, ends in driver arrest

COALVILLE, Utah — A driver was arrested Saturday afternoon after allegedly brandishing a weapon during a road rage incident.

The driver was reportedly engaged in multiple exchanges with another vehicle traveling the same direction on I-80. The two vehicles continually passed each other with the drivers exchanging rude hand gestures, according to Utah Highway Patrol. Eventually, the driver of the black Land Rover brandished a silver handgun at the other driver, who backed away and called the police.

Troopers, with assistance from Summit County deputies, conducted a traffic stop and took the driver into custody without incident.

“The highway is not a place to lose our temper,” said UHP Lt. Cameron Roden. “People make mistakes as they’re driving, and we can’t let our emotions overflow out on the highway where we’re doing things that are going to be dangerous to others. The last thing we want to do is escalate a situation into something that it shouldn’t.”
