Race to the Trades Soapbox Derby seeks to inspire the next generation of craftspeople

COALVILLE, Utah – The Franklin Fund is launching its inaugural Race to the Trades Soapbox Derby on Saturday, August 9. Racers will speed down Industrial Park Road in Coalville in this family-friendly event aimed to fuel creativity, craftsmanship, and enthusiasm for careers in the skilled trades.

Designed to engage youth and families alike, the soapbox derby invites participants to build and race their own cars, with two age divisions: the Apprentice Division (ages 11 and under) and the Tradesman Division (ages 12 and up). Participants can use assembly kits or create cars from scratch, so long as their vehicle meets basic safety standards—three wheels and functioning brakes and steering. Organizers say one rule rises above the rest: cars must be “outrageously fun.”

Trophies will be awarded for Fastest Car in each division, as well as Best Design and Most Patriotic Car.

The Franklin Fund, the nonprofit behind the event, is dedicated to promoting and supporting skilled trades and encouraging young people to explore hands-on, high-demand careers in construction, manufacturing, engineering, and related fields.

Registration is now open at franklinfund.org, and all community members—whether racing or cheering from the sidelines—are encouraged to attend.
