Summit County’s Most Wanted: Learn from experts to identify and remove noxious weeds

PARK CITY, Utah – Summit County Weeds Division is hosting a Community Noxious Weeds Tour on Saturday, June 7 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. to educate residents on how to identify and remove the county’s “most-wanted” weeds. Weed Superintendent Dave Bingham and Weed Enforcement Officer Dan Pena will lead the free event at Richardson Flat Park and Ride.

The Summit County Weed Division is responsible for identifying and eliminating noxious weeds in the county. One of their primary goals is to educate the public on how to identify and control noxious weeds on their own property.

Noxious weeds are invasive, non-native plants that are often brought in by ignorance, mismanagement or accident. In Summit County, these weeds pose threats to acres of agricultural land, forest land, ski resorts and open spaces around older subdivisions. For the Weed Division, preventing new infestations and controlling currently infected land is the first line of defense.

As part of their prevention strategy, the division is ramping up public programming to increase weed recognition, encourage community reporting, and support better control efforts. The Community Weeds Tour is a key piece of that strategy, offering attendees a hands-on look at what to watch for and how to safely remove invasive species from their own land.
