PARK CITY, Utah — Production has begun in Park City, Utah on an untitled HBO original film written, directed, and executive produced by Jesse Armstrong, the seven-time Emmy winner and Oscar nominee behind HBO’s hit series “Succession,” Warner Bros. Studios announced Tuesday. The film, marking Armstrong’s feature directorial debut, is set to premiere this spring.
The production brings notable star power to Park City, with Oscar and eleven-time Emmy nominee Steve Carell leading a cast that includes Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, and Emmy nominee Ramy Youssef.
Set against the backdrop of an international crisis, the film follows a group of billionaire friends coming together, continuing Armstrong’s exploration of wealth and power dynamics that he honed in “Succession.”
“We’re ecstatic to be back in business with the singular talent Jesse Armstrong coming off our fruitful collaboration on ‘Succession.’ Jesse once again raises the bar with a bold examination of modern greed, power and male ambition. That this feature serves as his directorial debut will only elevate what is already thrilling on the page, and we couldn’t be more excited to share this timely film with the world soon,” said Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President of HBO Programming and Head of HBO Drama Series and Films.
Armstrong expressed curiosity about his transition to directing: “I’m intrigued to discover whether being around so many brilliant actors and directors on ‘Succession’ has in any way rubbed off on me. Let’s hope so. I’m grateful to Casey Bloys, Francesca Orsi and the whole HBO team for backing this film so wholeheartedly and helping me pull together a dream team of cast and crew.”
The production team includes executive producers Frank Rich, Lucy Prebble, Jon Brown, Tony Roche, Will Tracy, Mark Mylod, and Jill Footlick, many of whom collaborated with Armstrong on “Succession.”
