Summit County shooting suspect charged with felon in possession of a firearm

SALT LAKE CITY—A Venezuelan national has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Salt Lake City on a firearm possession charge following an alleged shooting incident in Summit County, Utah.

Manuel A. Pimentel-Gonzalez, 24, of Eagle Mountain, Utah, was initially charged by complaint on Feb. 21, 2025. According to court documents, the charge stems from a dispute at a party on May 19, 2024, at a rural property in Summit County. Security footage from the incident allegedly captured Pimentel-Gonzalez retrieving a firearm from a parked BMW X7 SUV before shouting profanities in Spanish. Moments later, multiple gunshots were heard on the footage.

Investigators recovered at least 42 shell casings, four firearms, and several vehicles with bullet damage at the scene. A subsequent search warrant executed in Eagle Mountain led law enforcement to a white BMW SUV with gunfire damage. Authorities also found Pimentel-Gonzalez suffering from a gunshot wound that he had attempted to treat himself. A Draco 92 9×19 mm firearm with a wooden feature was seized and later linked to shell casings found at the Summit County shooting scene.

At the time of the incident, Pimentel-Gonzalez was on probation for a prior state conviction related to firearm possession by a restricted person. He has now been charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. His initial appearance on the indictment has yet to be scheduled before a U.S. magistrate judge at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in Salt Lake City.

Acting U.S. Attorney Felice John Viti of the District of Utah announced the indictment. An ATF task force officer assigned to the Utah Department of Corrections is investigating the case.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah is prosecuting the case as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing gun violence and violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement and community organizations.

An indictment is an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
