Ecker Hill students lead the charge to boost critical blood supplies

PARK CITY, Utah — The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) at Ecker Hill Middle School is organizing a community blood drive for the third consecutive year. This time, they’ve set the highest goal: filling 74 donation slots during their upcoming drive on Jan. 30, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at EHMS.

“Our first year, we had 24 slots, and last year we filled 48 slots,” an NJHS representative said. “Since we’ve always met our goal, they’ve raised the bar for us this year. We’re determined to rise to the occasion.”

The stakes are high as national blood supplies remain critically low. The Ecker Hill NJHS students go above and beyond to fill every slot for this life-saving cause. The students proudly embody community service while inspiring others to join them in making an impact.

NJHS students encourage all eligible community members to step up, give back, and help make this their most successful blood drive yet.

Donors can sign up here for either a blood or Power Red donation. The American Red Cross website explains,”[A ‘blood’ donation is the] most common type of donation, during which approximately a pint of ‘whole blood’ is given. This type of blood donation usually takes about an hour.”

A Power Red donation allows you to give a concentrated dose of red blood cells—the component of blood most commonly needed for transfusions. This type of donation uses an automated process to separate your red blood cells from other components like plasma and platelets, which are then safely returned to your body.

By spending a little extra time at your appointment, you can donate more red blood cells and make a greater impact on patients in need.

Who Benefits from Power Red Donations:

  • Trauma patients
  • Newborns and mothers needing emergency transfusions during birth
  • Individuals with sickle cell anemia
  • Patients experiencing significant blood loss

Key Details About Power Red Donations:

  • Time required: About 1.5 hours
  • Ideal blood types: O positive, O negative, A negative, and B negative
  • Donation frequency: Every 112 days, up to 3 times per year
  • Height/Weight requirements: Check specific guidelines
