Rocky Mountain Power alerts customers to Holiday billing scams
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — As the holiday season approaches, Rocky Mountain Power is urging customers to remain vigilant against an uptick in billing scams. Fraudulent activity, often involving individuals posing as utility representatives, tends to rise during this time of year.
To help customers protect themselves, Rocky Mountain Power highlighted several key facts about common scam tactics:
- False claims of service interruption: Scammers often claim that service will be disconnected within 30 to 60 minutes unless immediate payment is made. However, Rocky Mountain Power emphasized that it does not demand same-day payment to avoid disconnection.
- Prepaid card requests: Fraudsters may instruct customers to purchase a prepaid card and share the card details over the phone. The company clarified that customers can choose their payment method and will never be asked to pay using a prepaid card.
- Immediate payment demands: Rocky Mountain Power warned customers to be suspicious of anyone requesting on-the-spot payment via phone, email, text, or in person. The company does not make such demands, including for damaged or broken equipment.
- Verification of account details: Customers receiving suspicious calls are encouraged to ask the caller to provide their account number and compare it with the number on their bill. Rocky Mountain Power employees will always have access to the correct account details.
- Text message scams: Fraudsters increasingly use text messages to demand payment. Rocky Mountain Power noted it does not request payment through text and encouraged customers to manage their bills securely through the company’s official online portal.
Scammers may also use technology to manipulate caller ID, making it appear that the call originates from Rocky Mountain Power. The company advised customers to hang up and contact its customer service line directly at 1-888-221-7070 to confirm the legitimacy of any communication.
Rocky Mountain Power encourages customers to report any scam attempts, including the phone number used by the fraudster and details about the interaction, to help track and stop these activities.
