Park City earns high marks in Municipal Equality Index, second statewide
PARK CITY, Utah — The Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC) has released its 2024 Municipal Equality Index (MEI), an annual evaluation of over 500 cities nationwide on the inclusivity of their laws, policies, and services for LGBTQ+ individuals. Park City earned a score of 85 out of 100, maintaining its status as the second-highest-ranked municipality in Utah.
“Our ranking from the HRC confirms that our continuing dedication to equality is being recognized,” said Park City Mayor Nann Worel. “I want to thank our community partners, like Summit Pride, for teaming with us to fulfill our commitment to foster a Park City that is inclusive in its policies and practices – and, of course, helping us celebrate Pride Month this year.”
The MEI, now in its twelfth year, evaluates cities on factors such as non-discrimination laws, the inclusivity of municipal services, and the city’s relationship with the LGBTQ+ community. According to HRC President Kelley Robinson, local initiatives play a pivotal role in advancing equality.
“For LGBTQ+ people, building community isn’t just a phrase; it’s a way of life,” Robinson said. “In many important ways, local politics shapes our lives just as much as state or national politics does. Mayors and city councilors who take LGBTQ+ inclusion seriously build stronger communities, and in turn, their cities thrive.”
Park City’s social equity initiatives and partnerships, such as those with Summit Pride, reflect its ongoing commitment to inclusivity. The city’s full 2024 MEI scorecard is available online, along with more information on its broader equity efforts.
