UDOT to step up winter traction enforcement in Cottonwood Canyons
SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is stepping up enforcement of winter traction laws in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons through partnerships with local police departments, officials announced Thursday.
The increased enforcement, funded through recently passed legislation HB 488, will station officers at checkpoints in both canyons during the winter season. It will particularly focus on morning uphill traffic during storms and high-traffic periods.
“This funding allows us to take real action based on public feedback,” said UDOT Executive Director Carlos Braceras. “With officers dedicated to enforcing the traction law once the winter season is underway, we can make sure the roads in the canyons stay safe without pulling law enforcement away from their other public safety responsibilities.”

Cottonwood Heights Police will monitor Big Cottonwood Canyon, while Sandy City Police will oversee Little Cottonwood Canyon. The Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office will assist at merge points throughout both canyons.
Officials say Cottonwood Heights Police will deploy one to two officers per shift, increasing to three or four officers during busier periods.
To streamline the process, UDOT is continuing its voluntary Cottonwood Canyons Sticker Program, which provides free vehicle pre-inspection. Compliant vehicles receive a windshield sticker that may allow them to bypass checkpoint inspections when traction laws are in effect.
Despite the enhanced enforcement, officials warn that traffic delays remain possible during busy periods. Authorities encourage visitors to use public transit, especially those without proper traction equipment or those uncomfortable driving in severe winter conditions.
Checkpoints will be located at Gate Buttress in Little Cottonwood Canyon and at the chain-up area past the water plant in Big Cottonwood Canyon.
