Meghan Collins to discuss NASA-supported winter weather project at Park City Library

PARK CITY, Utah – Meghan Collins of the Desert Research Institute will discuss Mountain Rain or Snow, a NASA-funded citizen science project focused on improving winter precipitation predictions in mountainous regions, at the Local Speaker Series on Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. at the Park City Library.

Mountain Rain or Snow addresses the complexities of winter precipitation forecasting, particularly the difficulty of identifying precipitation phases—rain, snow, or mixed—near freezing temperatures. The project collects real-time data from volunteers nationwide during winter storms by leveraging a mobile app. This input is crucial for scientists aiming to improve daily weather forecasts, hazard predictions, and global hydrological research.

The event requires no registration and invites all interested community members to learn about the project’s impact and how they can contribute to improving winter weather predictions.

The Local Speaker Series is sponsored by the Friends of the Park City Library, a nonprofit volunteer group dedicated to supporting the Library.
