Snowbird’s Oktoberfest: A slice of Munich in the Wasatch Mountains
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Beer lovers can savor a taste of Germany at Snowbird’s Oktoberfest, running Saturdays and Sundays through Oct. 13. The Utah resort offers 50 varieties of local and German brews from noon to 6 p.m.
While Munich’s original Oktoberfest wraps up Oct. 6, Snowbird’s celebration continues for an extra week.
Beer prices in comparison
Both festivals serve Paulaner beer, with prices nearly identical. A liter costs 15.10 euros ($16.68) in Germany and $17 at Snowbird. The key difference? Snowbird sells souvenir steins for $18, while Munich’s stay in the tent.
Tapping the first keg
Snowbird tapped its first keg Aug. 31, four weeks after opening. Munich’s mayor will kick off festivities there Sept. 21.
Children’s activities at Oktoberfest
Families find a welcome atmosphere at Snowbird, with games like musical chairs in the main tent. Munich offers rides outside the beer tents but keeps children out of drinking areas. Germany’s legal beer-drinking age is 16.
Standing in lines
Be prepared for lines at Snowbird — for beer, food and event parking, which costs $12. Munich uses a reservation system to manage crowds, though some unreserved tables are available.
For a less crowded experience in Munich, head to the Old Oktoberfest area. At Snowbird, patience and planning are key to fully enjoying the alpine homage to Bavaria’s famous festival.
