Four Sundance Film Festival movies are heading to the big screen

PARK CITY, Utah — Four films shown at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival are heading to theaters in September. Here’s a guide to where you can find them on the big screen:

‘Will & Harper’

‘Will & Harper’ opened in select theaters on Sept. 13 and heads to Netflix on Sept. 27. It is currently playing at the Broadway Centre Cinemas in Salt Lake City. At the Sundance Film Festival, the film made quite a splash. It features two friends, Will Ferrell and Harper Steele, who take a road trip after Harper Steele transitions into being a woman. This documentary spans the entire country, portraying both the stage of acceptance of trans people in a particular region and the chemistry and friendship Will and Harper have developed over three decades of working with each other and being friends.

‘Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story’

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story‘ is opening at select theaters on Sept. 21 for a limited theatrical release. It will again be shown on Sept. 25, Christopher Reeve’s birthday. This documentary had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival in Park City. Many independent documentaries never see a theatrical release. Even good ones frequently travel the festival circuit as long as they can. If they are lucky, they will eventually be picked up by a distribution company. ‘Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story’ is one of the lucky ones.

The directors of this movie, Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, artfully intertwined clips of Reeve’s life as an actor with home movies of Reeve’s family life. Unlike at Sundance, moviegoers will not get the bonus of hearing the directors talk or seeing Christopher Reeve’s family in person. Still, this documentary presents a story of determination, courage, and inspiration worth watching.

‘Speak No Evil’ – a horror film to scare you just in time for Halloween

‘Speak No Evil’ opened in theaters on Sept. 13. You can catch both movies at the Century 16 in Salt Lake City and create your own Sundance Film Festival experience. This one is a horror film. A dream holiday becomes a nightmare when an American couple and their daughter spend the weekend at a British family’s idyllic country estate.

‘My Old Ass’ heads to broader theatrical release

‘My Old Ass,’ another film that had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, opens in theaters Sept. 27. This is a coming-of-age tale of a teenager on the cusp of leaving home for college who has an encounter with her 39-year-old self. Coming-of-age stories are a staple of the Sundance Film Festival. Young directors and writers are encouraged to write and direct stories they know. This one shows a different spin on the theme.
