Construction to ramp up on Park City’s Main Street starting Sept. 30

PARK CITY, Utah — Park City’s Public Utilities department has launched an accelerated phase of a major water infrastructure upgrade project on Main Street, set to begin Sept. 30.

The project, which started April 1, aims to replace the water main, fire lines, and water services along Main Street. It marks the first system-wide upgrade since 1984 and is necessary to prevent pipe breaks and other failures common in aging infrastructure.

Following feedback from local merchants and stakeholders after Phase I of the work, officials decided to pursue a more aggressive work schedule for Phase II.

Construction crews will work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, to install the main water line from 5th Street to the intersection of Main Street and Swede Alley. Residents and businesses can expect intermittent water shut-offs, with at least 48 hours’ notice provided.

The accelerated Phase II will occur in two parts. From Sept. 30 to Oct. 13, work will focus on the area between 5th and 4th Streets. The section of Main Street from Heber Avenue to 5th Street will remain open to two-way traffic.

From Oct. 14 to Nov. 20, construction will shift to the area between 4th Street and Swede Alley. During this period, Main Street from 15th Street to 4th Street will be unaffected and open to two-way traffic.

Throughout the project, sections of Main Street will be closed during work hours but reopened for traffic and parking after hours. Emergency vehicle access will be maintained, and delivery trucks will be allowed to enter work zones from both directions.

To accommodate the construction, 5th Street near the Post Office will become one-way eastbound for two weeks starting Sept. 30. Additionally, 4th and 5th Streets west of Main Street will be closed to through traffic from Oct. 14 to Nov. 20.

City officials have announced that all Old Town parking will be free for the duration of the project. The local trolley and Cut-A-Way services will continue to operate with detours in place.

The final phase of the project, involving individual water service and fire line connections, is scheduled for spring 2025. For more information on the project, visit the Park City Municipal website.
