Summit County Health introduces radon heat map

January is radon awareness month

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — Summit County Health introduced a new radon heat map last week aimed at promoting greater radon awareness among residents.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, radon is an odorless, invisible, radioactive gas naturally released from rocks, soil, and water. This gas can get into homes and buildings through small cracks or holes and build up in the air, and breathing it in over time can cause serious illness.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer deaths after cigarette smoke, and causes about 21,000 lung cancer deaths in the United States each year.

“The local radon map can be useful to see what areas are affected and is a tool to help increase awareness on radon levels in Summit County,” said Nancy Porter, Summit County Health epidemiologist. “This initiative highlights the importance of understanding and addressing the potential health risks associated with radon exposure.”
