What was that RV doing in Little Cottonwood Canyon?
LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON — Over the weekend, several out of state visitors decided to form a line and camp out on the side of the road after finding themselves trapped in the midst of a snowstorm up Little Cottonwood Canyon.
In an attempt to make their way to lodging for the evening, and before traction restrictions had gone into effect, an RV from Texas broke down on the side of the road. Shortly thereafter, a van from Oregon noticed the RV and decided to make it a convoy and turn in for the night.
However, after noticing the two vehicles off the side of the road, the Unified Police Department requested both vehicles relocate. While the van was able to do so quickly, the RV remained on the shoulder until a more convenient time in order to not add a significant traffic delay.
“Friendly PSA: the shoulder of S.R. 210 is NOT a KOA. Overnight camping/car camping/sleeping in your parked car is prohibited within 1/2 mile of any road in the Cottonwood Canyons, with exception to designated campgrounds due to @slcpu watershed regulations. This order is effective 100% of the time,” UDOT’s Facebook post read.
With more snow in the forecast, commuters are encouraged to take extra precautions and pay attention to traction restrictions in order to avoid becoming “beached” like the out-of-state convoy.
