University of Utah to host NCAA Ski National Championships in Park City
PARK CITY — The University of Utah Ski Team is set to host the 2022 National Championships next weekend in pursuit of the program’s third straight and 15th overall National title. With the stage set on the greatest snow on earth, the Utes will host the Nations best at Park City Mountain (Alpine) and Soldier Hollow (Nordic) Resorts from March 9-12.
The competition is a co-ed, combined event, with qualifying schools presenting three men and three women for the two alpine events of giant slalom and slalom, and two Nordic events which include the individual classic and mass start freestyle. Unlike regular meets where six skiers compete and only the top three scores are taken, all three athletes’ scores count which presents a much tighter competition than during the regular season.
Featuring a full cast of 12 Utes, qualifiers include Alpine women’s skiers Sona Moravcikova, Kaja Norbye and Katie Parker, with men skiers Joachim Lien, Wilhelm Normannseth and Gustav Vøllo. Meanwhile Nordic races will include Sophia Laukli, Novie McCabe and Sydney Palmer-Leger for the women and Samuel Hendry, Luke Jager and Bjørn Riksaasen for the men.
Notably, Utah is one of only five schools to produce a maximum of 12 qualifying athletes. The other programs include Denver, Colorado, Dartmouth and Vermont.
The competition will commence on Wednesday, March 9 with the Giant Slalom at Park City Mountain Resort and will conclude Saturday, March 12 with the 15/20K Freestyle at Soldier Hollow Resort. A full schedule of the competition can be found below.
