Tim Cook & Steve Ballmer take the stage at Silicon Slopes Summit next week
SALT LAKE CITY — Next week at the Salt Palace, Apple CEO Tim Cook and former CEO of Microsoft Steve Ballmer will take the stage at the Silicon Slopes Summit.
The event, now in its fifth year, is a celebration of the growing technology sector in Utah, from Silicon Slopes’ base in Lehi to Ogden — which was ranked the No. 1 labor market for all small U.S. metro areas (less than 1 million residents) by the Wall Street Journal this year.
Utah’s tech industry grew an average of 3.6% a year between 2007 and 2017, according to research from the University of Utah. That growth was more than double the national average.
Silicon Slopes Summit is a two-day event organized and hosted by the Silicon Slopes organization and community. This year’s event boasts over 150 speakers, along with breakout sessions and networking opportunities.
At the last Summit in February of 2020, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg spoke.
On Wednesday morning, October 13, Ballmer will take the stage alongside Senator Mitt Romney for a three-hour morning session. Ballmer is now the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, which defeated the Utah Jazz in the NBA playoffs last season.

Later that afternoon, Cook will take the stage with Utah’s other senator, Mike Lee, for an hour-long “fireside chat.”
“Tim is one of the great technology leaders of this generation and we are thrilled to have his insights shared from our stage,” said Clint Betts, executive director of Silicon Slopes. “We know Tim has had a great relationship with many in the Utah business community, and are honored to have him play a key role in this event. We look forward to hearing his insights on the evolution and trends in tech, especially at a time when Utah’s tech scene is growing at lightning speed.”
“I have known and worked with my friend Tim Cook for years,” said Sen. Lee. “Under his detailed and dedicated leadership, Apple is a hallmark of American growth and innovation. I was thrilled to invite him to this year’s Silicon Slopes Summit, and I look forward to welcoming Mr. Cook and introducing him to the Utahns building the future of technology.”
Gov. Cox will speak at the morning session on Thursday, along with Ancestry CEO Deb Liu.
Topics that will be covered throughout the two days include cryptocurrency, climate change, cybercrime, and the post-Covid world.
Other speakers at next week’s event include:
- Three-time NBA Champion Dwayne Wade
- Ryan Smith, founder & executive chairman of Qualtrics
- Dan Reynolds, lead singer of Imagine Dragons
- iHeartMedia CEO Bob Pittman
- Gail Miller, owner of the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies
- Marc Harrison, president & CEO of Intermountain Healthcare
Every attendee will be required to test negative for COVID-19 or be fully vaccinated. It’s recommended that all attendees dress somewhere between business casual and business attire.
