Hiker dies at the base of Sundial Peak

BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON, Utah — A missing hiker was found deceased at the bottom of a 200-foot cliff at the base of Sundial Peak near Lake Blanche on Monday.

A couple had been hiking together towards Sundial when one of them turned around towards the lake because they weren’t feeling well. In the evening, the person at the lake had not seen or heard from their partner and became concerned.

Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, along with two Department of Public Safety helicopters were called out on Sunday night after receiving the missing person report.

Around 1 am on Monday after the helicopters and most of the SAR members had left, a ground team found the perished hiker at the base of Sundial Peak.

All the teams were off the mountain by 9 am Monday morning.
