TOKYO, Japan. — Eddy Alvarez, today, became only the third athlete in history, man or woman, representing the United States, to win an Olympic medal in both the summer and the winter Games. He’s now added a Tokyo 2020 Baseball medal to his Sochi 2014 Speed Skating Silver. Alvarez was bestowed the honor and privilege via vote by his Team USA peers to walk in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Opening Ceremony as the co-flagbearer. 

It is as of yet unknown which metal medal it’ll be in Japan, however, that fact doesn’t factor in to his monumental achievement. Alvarez, 31, had multiple medal opportunities in Russia, capitalizing on the one, silver (5,000 relay), 11th (1,000), 19th (1,500), 31st (500). In Japan, his baseball Team USA gets just the one shot at the one medal in the singular sport, on which they’ve capitalized, as well.

Team USA, after being relegated to the repachage, beat the team from Korea 7 – 2. They’ll play a rematch from these Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games brackets with the Japanese team for the gold medal game on Saturday. Todays losers against USA, Korea will take on the team from the Dominican Republic for bronze.

The Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation was insightfully enshrined before the Salt Lake 2002 Winter Olympic Games and continues to actively act as a shining example for world-wide management of Olympic facilities and venues. Game’s legacy to hand down to generations of athletes and nationals is an increasingly important piece of any Olympic host cities puzzle. Spreading the wealth and the fun around among communities, Kearns’ Utah Olympic Oval (UOO) joins its sister entities in the organization’s trifecta of the Soldier Hollow (SOHO) in Midway and the Utah Olympic Park in Park City.

Alvarez, started his speedskating career by in-line skating at five years old. Born and raised in Miami, he’s now a Florida Marlin Baseball player.

Filmed at the Utah Olympic Oval, in Kearns, a suburb of Salt Lake City, the  USA Speedskating’s social media good luck wishes apparently made it all the way across the pond to Tokyo.
