Park City Preschool Registration Underway

Demand is greater than supply for Park City School District preschool, which offers instruction for three- and four-year-olds. This year, the school district is utilizing a lottery system to award slots in its preschool program, and the deadline to apply is Feb. 19.

Preschool offers children “a comprehensive learning experience and supportive environment,” and has been shown to increase student success in later years. Preschool classes are held at all elementary school campuses. Class ratios are a maximum of one teacher for seven students for three-year-olds, and one teacher for nine students for four-year-olds. Early learning at PCSD benefits the community through improved student achievement levels that are at or above state academic levels. Additionally, participation in preschool increases high school graduation rates, years of college completed and lifetime earned income.

The school district has the capacity to serve 160 preschool students per year, and typically has a waiting list of 40-50 students, said PCSD Superintendent Dr. Jill Gildea.

Three-year-old students attend either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday for three hours in the mornings. Four-year-old students attend either Monday through Thursday for three hours in the afternoons or Monday through Thursday for full days. Students must live in the Park City School district boundary to enroll

Preschool is made possible by a partnership between PCSD and the Park City Education Foundation (PCEF), which contributes $100,000 in funding toward that program. Preschool tuition is $150 per month for three-year-olds. For four-year-olds, tuition is $275 per month for half-day and $500 per month for full-day. For both age levels, tuition may be reduced for qualifying families and would not affect lottery results.

In the lottery system, priority will be given to :

1. Students currently enrolled in the PCSD 3-year-old program.
2. At-risk students according to the Student Access Grant definition of at risk students.
3. Students currently enrolled in the Holy Cross preschool program.
4. Students of district employees.
