Drylands, which cover ~40% of the western U.S., are sometimes dismissed as “wastelands.” However these understudied and commonly misunderstood systems support billions of people, store vast amounts of soil carbon, and are predicted to be highly sensitive to intensifying changes in climate and land use. We will discuss what makes these ecosystems so unique and important at the global scale and, at the same time, challenging to understand and predict.
This event is designed for adults.
