Local scares: Halloween horror movies with ties to the Wasatch Back

PARK CITY, Utah — Park City has its own history of haunts and horrors, and some filmmakers have used the Wasatch Back as a backdrop for their own spooky stories.

Want to celebrate Halloween with a scary movie with local ties? Here’s a list to get you started:

The Mine (2012) — filmed in Heber, Fairfield, and Ophir, the story follows a group of five friends that decide to explore an abandoned, haunted mine on Halloween.

—

I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006) — Despite this slasher film being set in Colorado, it was actually filmed primarily in Salt Lake City, with some scenes in Park City. Exactly one year after a group of teenagers cover up a friend’s death, they are haunted by a mysterious figure with a hook.

—

Bats (1999) — Genetically mutated bats escape and terror ensues. Of course, the town’s leading bat expert and local sheriff are on the case to stop them. You may not recognize the locations though. On its IMDb page, Park City is listed for the “Mine” location, while Magna was used for the street scenes.

—

The Boogens (1981) — filmed in the old mines around Park City, this movie pits a small mining town against turtle-like monsters that are released from an abandoned and boarded-up silver mine.

—

Snowbeast (2011) — Set in Canada but filmed at Brighton, a research team is stalked by something not human.

—

Ice Spiders (2007) — A young ski team training for the Olympics is attacked by giant spiders produced by a top-secret government project.
