National Ability Center’s Summit Challenge returns for 20th year Aug. 29

Annual Park City cycling event invites riders of all abilities, with adaptive participants riding free

PARK CITY, Utah — The National Ability Center will mark the 20th anniversary of its Summit Challenge on Aug. 29, bringing cyclists of all ages and abilities together for one of the organization’s largest annual fundraising events.

The ride raises money for the Park City-based nonprofit’s adaptive recreation programs, which provide outdoor and recreational opportunities for people with disabilities.

Organizers expect about 1,000 riders and nearly 200 spectators at this year’s event, with a fundraising goal of $185,000. Adaptive riders can participate for free but are required to register in advance.

Participants can choose from a 1-mile Discovery Loop and 16-, 25-, 50-, 80- and 100-mile routes through northern Utah’s mountain landscape. The event also includes 4- and 7-mile routes reserved for adaptive riders. All routes are fully supported, according to the National Ability Center.

“The Summit Challenge is more than just a ride; it demonstrates what we can achieve when we come together to remove barriers,” National Ability Center CEO Willie Ford said in a statement. “Every participant, spectator and volunteer plays a critical role in helping us build a future where everybody has the opportunity to experience the outdoors.”

A free Vendor Village will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with vendors, music and food. The area will be open to riders, spectators and other community members.

Founded in Park City in 1985, the National Ability Center offers more than 20 year-round programs, including skiing, snowboarding, cycling, climbing, rafting, equestrian activities, archery, camps and life skills programs. The organization operates campuses in Park City and Moab.
