PARK CITY, Utah — Summit Land Conservancy has two free community events on the calendar this month, starting with a stewardship work session at Summit Community Gardens and wrapping up with a moonlit solstice gathering at Round Valley.
The first event, a “Great Weed Pull,” is scheduled for Saturday, June 13, from 8 a.m. to noon at Summit Community Gardens. The conservancy is partnering with Summit County and Basin Recreation to remove invasive species including Dyer’s Woad, Thistle and White Top while the plants are in bloom and before they can release seeds.
“These are all aggressive, introduced plants that grow rapidly and create dense thickets which crowd out our native grasses and wildflowers,” Summit Land Conservancy CEO Cheryl Fox said. “When we remove these weeds, we help to restore our local grassland ecosystem and ensure that native plants can thrive and support the wildlife that depends on them.”
Coffee and bagels will be provided. The June 13 event is part of the conservancy’s ongoing Stewardship Saturdays series, which offers weekend programming focused on conservation efforts and community engagement.
On Sunday, June 21, the conservancy and Mountain Trails Foundation will co-host a “Moonshine Social” at Round Valley from 7 to 9:30 p.m. to mark the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Attendees are encouraged to hike, bike or run to the gathering point at the intersection of the Seventy 101 and Round Valley Express trails. Sunset is expected at 9 p.m.
The event will include grilled hot dogs and veggie dogs, cold drinks, swag and views of the sunset and moonrise over the surrounding landscape.
Both events are free and open to the public. RSVPs are requested and available through the Summit Land Conservancy website.
