French startup develops ski-inspired electric skates

HONFLEUR, France — A French startup called SKWHEEL is developing electric skates designed to replicate the feeling of skiing on snow but on pavement, gravel, and other non-winter terrain.

Founded by three entrepreneurs with backgrounds in ski culture and product development, SKWHEEL grew out of years of experimentation aimed at transferring carving, balance, and edge control to a wheeled format. According to the company’s history, one founder spent more than six years refining early prototypes before the team formally launched the venture and committed to full-scale development.

The product consists of two independent electric “skis” worn on the feet, using a lean-based steering system and a series of patented mechanical components. The company says its design focuses on balance, vibration absorption, and multi-terrain adaptability, drawing from both alpine skiing mechanics and electric micro-mobility technology.

SKWHEEL has drawn international attention after appearing at major technology showcases, including CES in Las Vegas, where it was positioned alongside other emerging personal transportation devices. Demonstrations and third-party coverage show the electric skis being used on both paved and dirt surfaces, suggesting a hybrid role between recreational gear and personal mobility equipment.

As with many new micro-mobility products, questions remain around regulation, safety standards, and where such devices would fit within existing transportation rules. SKWHEEL has indicated it is working within current frameworks in some markets, though broader adoption may depend on how cities and countries choose to classify and regulate the technology.

The company is currently focused on expanding distribution and visibility as it moves from early adopters toward wider public use.
