Vonn claims another World Cup podium with silver in Tarvisio super-g

As the Olympics approach on one of Vonn's favorite speed tracks in Cortina, she is dominating the women's World Cup speed circuit with an impressive 7 top-3 finishes

TARVISIO, Italy — Lindsey Vonn continued her steady return to the top of alpine skiing Sunday, finishing second in an FIS World Cup super g in Taravisio. Saturday, Vonn took third in the women’s downhill in Tarvisio for the fifth podium result in the discipline this season.

The 41-year-old American has finished on the podium in seven out of eight World Cup starts this season and the one time she missed the podium, she placed fourth, just .08 seconds off the podium. Vonn earned took second Sunday, marking her sixth consecutive top-three finish in downhill competition as momentum builds toward the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina. Vonn, a former Olympic champion and one of the most decorated skiers in the sport’s history, has emphasized consistency as she works her way back into elite form.

“It was actually really tough,” Vonn told Eurosport after the race. “I tried not to have too many expectations because I knew the other girls were going to be fast and the snow was really soft.”

The Tarvisio result adds to a string of strong performances that have underscored Vonn’s competitiveness against a younger field on the World Cup circuit.

Vonn was one of the sport’s dominant speed skiers in phase one of her career. Vonn has won three Olympic medals: one gold in the downhill at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and two bronze medals in Super-G in 2010 and downhill in the 2018 Pyeong Chang games.

The Olympics are fast approaching in Cortina, Italy – where Vonn has an impressive track record. She’s won the downhill there five times and has been on the podium in both super g and downhill 20 times throughout the course of her career.

“I don’t think I would have tried this comeback if the Olympics weren’t in Cortina. If it had been anywhere else, I would probably say it’s not worth it. But, for me, there’s something special about Cortina that always pulls me back and it’s pulled me back one last time,” Vonn told ABC ahead of the 2026 Olympics.
