PARK CITY, Utah — Two suspects were arrested Saturday evening after a reported theft at the Macey’s Market led to a vehicle pursuit involving Summit County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Utah Highway Patrol.
According to Sgt. Skyler Talbot with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the store around 7:45 p.m. after an employee reported an adult male and female concealing merchandise while being monitored on surveillance cameras.
The employee remained on the phone with dispatchers as the suspects left the store and parking lot before deputies arrived. A Utah Highway Patrol trooper located the suspect vehicle in the area and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver failed to stop and fled, initiating a pursuit.
Summit County deputies took the lead on the pursuit, with assistance from UHP. The vehicle traveled eastbound on Interstate 80, exited at U.S. 40, and continued into the Silver Creek area before deputies conducted a successful Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver near Pace Road, bringing the pursuit to an end.
Both the driver and passenger were taken into custody without further incident.
Talbot said the stolen merchandise from Macy’s included groceries, cosmetic items, and toiletry bags, with the total value estimated around $750. Deputies also recovered approximately $800 worth of nicotine vape products and additional items inside the vehicle that still had price tags attached, suggesting they may have been stolen from other stores.
Investigators are working to determine where the additional items originated so they can be returned.
The incident remains under investigation.
