Para skiers start World Cup season, all races qualifiers for Paralympics

PARK CITY, Utah — Saylor O’Brien, Mathew Brewer, and Tyler McKenzie, all three of whom race for the National Ability Center (NAC), are listed on the International Ski & Snowboard Federation (FIS) Para Alpine skiing standings for the season, which got underway at Austria’s World Cup this month. They are coached by medal-winning Paralympic Guide, Rob Umstead.

FIS writes that a blockbuster line-up of Para Alpine races will bring athletes into the new year. These events precede the highly anticipated Winter Paralympic Games in Milano Cortina.

There will be eight stops across Europe. Some of the best athletes in the world will descend on legendary slopes to fine-tune their form, with stakes higher than ever.

Each event this season will contribute towards qualification for the upcoming Games. We are now in the home stretch.

2025/2025 PARA ALPINE CALENDAR

The first stop of the new campaign was in Steinach, Austria. Held between 10 and 12 December, the event featured a mix of technical slopes and high-speed runs that were popular with participants. A long-time host of the World Cup, this well-maintained site was an ideal opener for what looks to be an enthralling season.

Next up marked a return to the iconic Italian slopes of Santa Caterina. It debuted in the World Cup last season in two thrilling days and will commence this term between 15 and 17 December. Renowned for its steep and demanding course, it provided a welcome challenge for competitors.

American female athlete Kelsey O’Driscoll, a member of U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s Para Alpine Team based in Park City, from the East Coast, landed on the podium, as seen below.

St. Moritz, Switzerland, will be the final stop before the new year. Athletes will return between 19 and 21 December to close out 2025 ahead of the festive break. With world-class facilities and a history of hosting major international competitions, it is the perfect all-round venue to warm skiers up for the Games.

Welcoming skiers into 2026 will be a return to Austria, this time to Saalbach, between 12 and 17 January. A consistent stop on the global tour, it is a reliable host with a range of courses to test competitors as they step up preparations ahead of March.

Between 22 and 23 January, athletes will compete in Feldberg, Germany. Much like Santa Caterina, this will be the second time the World Cup stops at this venue, having delivered an electric debut in January. With a designated World Cup course, the steep slope brings spectators closer than ever to the action.

Between 26 and 30, FIS will make its first of two consecutive stops in France. The first is Méribel, which is hosting a World Cup event for the very first time. In the heart of Southeastern France, the resort will bring together attendees on the ‘legendary’ Corbey racecourse as they continue preparations and qualification bids for MiCo. As February rolls in, athletes will head a short drive away to the second French stop, this time in Tignes, between 2 and 6. Rich in history, this location has hosted numerous World Cup matches and will no doubt provide reliable conditions once more.

The penultimate stop across Europe will see skiers return to Switzerland for their final test, or final chance to clinch qualification, before the Paralympics. A well-established venue in Veysonnaz, 9-10 February, will host a short stopover.

Finally, the event that needs no introduction: Milano Cortina. Athletes who have qualified will compete in Italy at the Winter Paralympic Games from 4 to 15 March 2026.
