ST. MORITZ, Switzerland — Lindsey Vonn made history Friday, capturing her 83rd World Cup victory and becoming the oldest alpine World Cup winner ever at age 41 in a commanding downhill performance that marked her first win since returning from retirement.
The U.S. Ski Team racer dominated the St. Moritz course, winning by nearly a full second over Austria’s Magdalena Egger to claim her sixth career victory at the Swiss resort, dating back to 2010.
Vonn announced her comeback to the U.S. team in fall 2024 after retiring in 2019. She debuted in her first race exactly one year ago at St. Moritz, finishing 14th. Throughout the season, she steadily climbed toward the podium, finally breaking through with a second-place finish in super-G at the Sun Valley World Cup Finals to close out the season.
The off-season brought renewed determination as Vonn prepared for what she announced will be her final campaign, with eyes on more World Cup podiums and Olympic medals in Cortina during the 2025-26 season.
Vonn’s winning margin of .98 seconds over Egger demonstrated her continued dominance on the downhill course. Austria’s Mirjam Puchner finished third. Teammates and staff greeted an emotional Vonn in the finish area, celebrating the remarkable achievement.
The U.S. team delivered a strong showing overall, placing seven skiers in the top 30. Breezy Johnson finished 15th, while Bella Wright took 16th in her best result in two seasons, marking her first race back since ending her season early last February.
Jackie Wiles finished 18th, Haley Cutler posted a career-best 20th place, Keely Cashman took 24th, and Allison Mollin earned her first career World Cup points with a 27th-place finish.
The women’s circuit continues with another downhill Saturday and a super-G on Sunday at St. Moritz.
