Council signs off on name for new City Park community center

PARK CITY, Utah — Park City council approved the Mine at City Park as the official name for the new community center currently under construction at City Park.

At Thursday’s city council meeting, Recreation Department division manager Jessica Moran presented the name to council, describing how the subcommittee arrived at the name. After a long brainstorming process, the committee arrived at the Mine at City Park.

“Mining history has always been a point of pride in our community,” said Moran. “We felt like this name really honors the legacy of Miners Hospital, and it also reflects that energy and that creativity that we were looking for.”

Moran noted it was important to finalize the name before the end of the year to help the department design and approve signage according to code for the new building.

The name was approved by council, though faced some scepticism from mayor-elect Ryan Dickey, who ultimately seconded the motion to approve the name. “I have to admit, I don’t love the name,” he said. “Kind of seems like an acronym in search of a real name, but I think your presentation captures why the board went there, and I’ll get on board.”

Park City Municipal broke ground on the $19 million community center in City Park in mid August. The new center will replace the current building, which dates back to the early 1980s.

At 15,000 square feet, one of the primary purposes behind the center is to expand summer recreation camp enrollment from 100 to 150 kids.

The project is anticipated to be completed in December 2026, at which point it will also host multiple recreation programs that are currently held in the MARC facility.
