City reminds skiers to safely dispose of banned fluoro wax before hitting the slopes

PARK CITY, Utah — Recycle Utah and Park City Municipal are partnering again this year to provide safe disposal for fluoro ski wax, which is banned in Park City due to PFAS “forever chemicals” in the wax that leach from snowmelt into the Park City watershed. Forever chemicals from fluoro wax can be harmful to soil and wildlife health as well.

When skiers take their fluoro ski wax to Recycle Utah, they will receive a free container of non-fluoro wax.

Park City banned fluorowax in February 2023 after contaminants found in the city’s well water were traced back to the wax as the probable source.

PFAS detected in Park City’s well water has been reported to be above EPA standards, according to Park City Municipal. “Fortunately, PFAS has not been found in any of our other drinking water sources which are treated at the new 3Kings WTP and the Quinn’s Junction WTP.”
