Snowguns roar to life in the Wasatch Back as resorts wait for snowy weather

UTAH — Snowmaking operations are finally underway in the Wasatch Back at Utah ski resorts after an unseasonably warm November. Utah Olympic Park, Park City Mountain, Deer Valley, and more are posting videos on social media of their snowmaking guns in full operation as they work to build their own base snowpack and hope for more to come from Mother Nature.

Along with many other resorts, Deer Valley and Park City Mountain are waiting and evaluating weather before announcing new opening dates.

A dry cold front that moved through overnight should aid in snowmaking conditions for the resorts for the next couple days. Two main long-range forecast models differ widely on anticipated storms this weekend, but both are showing an optimistically active pattern for this weekend, with current totals in the 5-10″ range.

Woodward Park City is hoping for a November 28 opening, and Powder Mountain, Nordic Valley, Eagle Point, Solitude, and Alta also have opening dates set for late November and December.

Brian Head Resort was the first Utah resort to open, with skiers on the mountain November 21.
