Park City Mountain delays opening due to lack of snow but confirms Pioneer lift and new parking garage set to open this season

Announcement comes day after Epic prices rise

PARK CITY, Utah – Park City Mountain has postponed its scheduled Nov. 21 opening to an unspecified future date due to a lack of snow, but says guests can expect a fully operational lift system this season and several on-mountain improvements aimed at strengthening early-season reliability and enhancing the beginner experience.

The delayed opening announcement came the day after Epic pass prices went up at midnight on November 16, according to a promotional email, and it marks the second time Park City Mountain has made an operational announcement the day after Epic pass prices went up.

John Kanaly, senior manager of communications for Park City Mountain, said the resort’s lift maintenance team completed several major summer projects across the resort — work he described as essential to ensuring smooth operations heading into winter.

“We expect all of our lifts to be operational this season,” Kanaly said. “Over the summer, our team completed several key maintenance projects across the fleet, including a full haul rope replacement on Quicksilver, a haul rope splice on King Con, and new bullwheel bearings on Thaynes.”

The Pioneer lift, a fixed-grip triple that carries riders from below McKonkey’s Express to the top of Blue Slip Bowl, was closed all of last season.

Kanaly added that many of the projects were documented on the resort’s social media channels, but they represent “just a small part of the extensive work completed over the summer to ensure our lifts are ready for winter.”

Snowmaking improvements continue after last year’s expansion

Park City Mountain also upgraded its snowmaking network — a critical component of early-season terrain openings. Following last year’s expansions on runs such as Chicane and Another World, the resort installed or replaced more than 2,000 feet of snowmaking pipe this summer.

“This important work ensures our snowmaking system operates efficiently and reliably,” Kanaly said.

New “Moose Camp” beginner area debuts at Canyons

One of the most visible additions guests will see this winter is a new learning area near Red Pine Lodge called Moose Camp. The reimagined beginner zone features two magic carpets — including one brand-new conveyor — along with redesigned terrain intended to help newcomers progress comfortably.

The area is meant to guide beginners from their first turns to being ready to board a chairlift for the first time.

The resort also completed dirt work in the 3 Kings Terrain Park, shaping key features permanently into the ground. That change reduces the amount of snow required to build out the park each winter and frees up snowmaking resources for other parts of the mountain.

Lower Village parking garage on track

Kanaly said the resort remains in regular contact with TCFC, which owns and manages the Lower Village parking garage construction at Canyons Village. “They’ve reported that construction remains on schedule,” he said.

The resort announced earlier this fall that parking at Canyons Village will remain free this season.
