“Shop Mountainkind” returns: Park City Chamber offers 50% bonus to support local businesses

PARK CITY, Utah — The Park City Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau has launched its second annual “Shop Mountainkind” campaign, which offers shoppers a 50% bonus on Mountainkind Card purchases to encourage local holiday spending.

The digital gift card, powered by Yiftee and Mastercard, can be used exclusively at participating partner businesses throughout Summit County. Shoppers who buy a card valued between $25 and $200 will receive an additional 50% bonus funded by the Chamber. For example, a $200 purchase earns an extra $100 in bonus credit. This incentive is available while supplies last and is limited to one card per email address.

Last year, the Mountainkind campaign generated over $45,000 to be spent at local businesses.

A Tech-Forward Local Gift Card with No Plastic Waste

The Mountainkind Card debuted in 2024 as the Chamber’s initiative to create a streamlined and environmentally friendly gift card system.

“It’s a digital card with no plastic waste, easy delivery, and simple redemption,” said Scott House, Senior Director of Partner Services. “Mastercard powers it with fraud protection and tap-to-pay compatibility. If you accept Mastercard and are part of the network, you can accept the Mountainkind Card.”

House noted that the Chamber selected Yiftee because many community gift card platforms were “clunky, cumbersome, or outdated.” The digital-first system eliminates the need for mailing, printing, or staffing to distribute cards, reducing plastic waste.

More than 100 businesses now participate, spanning retail, dining, recreation, services, and nonprofits.

Keeping Dollars Local and Circulating

Unlike conventional gift card programs, Mountainkind imposes no fees, discounts, or revenue sharing with participating partners. Merchants retain 100% of the redemption value, minus standard Mastercard processing fees.

“We know that about 60 cents of every dollar spent locally stays in the community,” House said. “This card amplifies that impact, encouraging people to explore businesses they might otherwise overlook.”

The Chamber has generated over $50,000 in Mountainkind spending since the program’s launch.

Early Adopters See New Revenue Streams

Outdoor retailer JANS was among the first to adopt the program, onboarding multiple locations, including its Park Avenue shop, Snow Park Lodge, and White Pine Touring.

“There really is no risk,” said Jack Walzer, general manager. “Given the high participation level in outdoor activities in Park City, JANS and White Pine will always be viable options for cardholders.”

For staff at the register, Walzer stated that the process is seamless. “It’s business as usual for us—no different than processing a regular credit card.”

JANS has redeemed nearly $6,500 in Mountainkind Cards so far, which represents a meaningful addition to any local business. “It’s great to see participation and customers choosing us. Shopping local offers a chance to retain existing customers and attract new ones. It’s an excellent long-term program.”

New Restaurants See Opportunity in Old Town

On Lower Main Street, the newly opened French-inspired bistro Le Dépôt Brasserie joined the program within weeks of its opening.

“We believe this is a fantastic way to connect with locals and visitors,” Galen Zamarra, co-founder of Galen Hospitality Group, shared. “The program provides great value to customers and is easy for restaurants to participate in.”

Old Town eateries often hear from Park City residents that parking or crowds deter them from visiting. Le Dépôt Brasserie hopes that Mountainkind will change that behavior. “I hope it encourages locals to get out and support local businesses. It’s also an easy way for people to recommend their favorite spots to friends.”

As Park City’s restaurant scene thrives again, Le Dépôt Brasserie views Mountainkind as a direct boost. “It incentivizes people to try new places. Restaurants need all the help they can get, so the added exposure is invaluable,” Zamarra said.

For first-time visitors, the restaurant offers a range of experiences—from après-ski on the plaza to full dinner service. “Some might think we’re too expensive or fancy; maybe this encourages them to give us a try.”

Why Shoppers Use It

House explained that the card addresses a common issue: buying gifts for people who seem to “have everything.” “The Mountainkind Card is something everyone can use,” he said. “It can be spent at over 100 businesses. You can buy skis, treat your dog at the vet, enjoy a meal, get a massage, or take a class. It becomes an adventure.”

The card also appeals to employers and conference organizers, who can bulk-purchase cards for staff incentives or attendee gifts.

House mentioned that the Chamber envisions expanding the network to include more service providers, healthcare providers, pet care services, and nonprofits. “The long-term vision goes beyond retail and dining,” he noted. “It aims to become a workforce support tool and a community-building resource.”

How to Buy

Mountainkind Cards can be purchased year-round at parkcitychamber.com/mountainkind-card. Buyers enter the recipient’s email address, personalize a message, and complete checkout. Cards can be added to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, or viewed in the Yiftee app.

Standard gift-card fees apply, similar to purchasing a Mastercard or Visa gift card.

A Program Built for Community

House said the Chamber intends to keep the momentum growing. “The more businesses that join, the stronger the program becomes. The more cards purchased, the more dollars circulate locally. It’s a flywheel,” he said. “This program is about keeping our economy healthy and keeping our people connected.”
