Only 100 bottles: Alpine Distilling’s “Big Heavy” has big debut

PARK CITY, Utah — Alpine Distilling is marking its ninth year in Park City with the debut of a rare, single-edition whiskey: Triple Oak Rye Whiskey – Big Heavy. The limited release, capped at 100 bottles for the public, will be unveiled on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Alpine Distilling Social Club at 364 Main Street.

“After the acclaim of our Triple Oak, we set one experimental rye barrel aside finished in French and American oak, and gave it two more years, on top of the initial four in charred new American oak, to age gracefully in our dry mountain air,” said Col. Rob Sergent, Founder of Alpine Distilling. “When we finally pulled the bung, every one of us went quiet. What poured out was a ‘Big Heavy’ rye-layered with vanilla and caramel, and a surge of white pepper and kitchen spices that rolled across the tongue with uncommon grace. It’s the best rye I’ve had the privilege to enjoy. Only 100 bottles, destined for very happy homes.”

The nine-year expression began as Alpine’s award-winning Straight Rye Whiskey, distilled from a mashbill of malted and unmalted rye and aged in No. 4 char new American oak barrels. The whiskey was then transferred into a custom cask built from Arkansas and French oak, each stave lightly toasted to heighten notes of spice, vanilla and caramel. Alpine describes the finished spirit as balanced and complex, offering layers of caramel, dark fruit, walnut and oak, with lingering traces of honey, clove, pepper and mineral spice.

“Triple Oak Rye Whiskey is a study in patience,” said Sara Sergent, CEO and Master Botanical Distiller at Alpine Distilling. “We wanted to showcase what happens when you give an already exceptional rye a new vessel and time to tell the rest of its story. The interplay of two caskings has created something truly singular; expressive, layered, and unmistakably Alpine.”

Alpine Distilling was voted the No. 1 distillery and distiller in Utah by Salt Lake Magazine readers. Its Park City Social Aid & Pleasure Club offers guests access to its full lineup of spirits, including limited releases. The lounge is open Tuesday through Sunday on Main Street.

Founded and operated in Park City, Alpine Distilling has earned numerous international awards for its gin, herbal liqueurs and whiskey portfolio, including top honors in London, Las Vegas, New York, California and Hong Kong.
