Hiker falls to death on Mount Superior in Little Cottonwood Canyon

LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON — A hiker died Thursday after falling along the south ridge of Mount Superior, according to the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials said, search and rescue teams were dispatched Thursday afternoon after receiving reports of a person who had fallen in the rugged terrain above Little Cottonwood Canyon. Crews located the hiker shortly after arriving and determined the individual had fallen a considerable distance. The hiker was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rescuers later recovered the body and brought it safely off the mountain.
Authorities have not released the hiker’s name or gender, saying efforts to notify family members were still underway as of Thursday evening.
No additional details about the circumstances of the fall were immediately available. The sheriff’s office said more information will be released when next of kin have been contacted.
